The Wilton-Wing Miners opened up their season at home against the New Salem-Almont Holsteins in a brawl that would come down to the final minutes in the fourth on Dec. 16.
The first quarter of basketball started out fast and aggressive from both sides of the court. Rebounds would be key as the Holsteins blocked or managed to get a hand on a multiple of the Miners shots. Miners powered through however with a slight lead after the first 14-11.
Sutton Berg took an open layup to start things off for the Miners in the second. Fouls started to pile on for both sides, and Justin Inglis knocked down both of his shots at the line. Trevor Kershaw cashed in not one but two three pointers to help extend the Miner lead going into the half.
Holsteins came out with confidence after the half cutting the Miner lead in quick time. With 3:30 left in the third, the Holsteins tied things up with the Miners. After a quick five points, the Miners tried to pull away but a Holstein three made it a close game to end the third.
