Fans shivering under their fleece blankets gave Central McLean’s 8-6 mid-April win over Wilton-Wing the feeling of a January playoff game at Lambeau Field.
But despite the chi l ly 37-degree conditions, the athletes soldiered on at Wilton Softball Field, with the first three innings shaping up as a pitchers’ duel between Miners’ hurler Taryn Schurhamer and counterpart Sophie Sparrow.
The Cougars struck first in the fourth inning, when infielder Sydney Fischer drove in speed merchant Taya Hornberger, who previously stole two bases to put herself in scoring position. Daisy Sparrow poured it on by knocking through an RBI single, scoring Fischer at 2-0.
