Coaches can attribute wins and losses to any variety of things, but Wilton-Wing’s Lisa Jenkins put it pretty simply Saturday night after her Miners lost a championship game matchup to the Underwood Comets by the score of 52-35.
“Underwood deserved to win this game,” said Jenkins. “Tonight they were the better team.”
The Comets scored first, but found themselves trailing throughout the first quarter, falling behind 12-7 by the end of the first stanza.
By the halftime buzzer though, the Comets had rallied thanks to some three-point shots from sisters McKenna and Kaylie Wilson, taking a 28-22 lead into the break.
“We were going to force them to make those shots, and they did,” said Jenkins. “Then we just shut down. We couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”
Those first-half three-pointers were nice to pad the score, but it was the Comets’ defense that ultimately led to the Miners’ downfall.
