The Lady Miners headed into the region 5 tournament sitting in the fourth seed and were ready to take on the Comets of Underwood, who they had defeated earlier in the season in four sets. The Miners were playing good volleyball as of late, winning their last three regular season games coming in.
“We are looking to focus on what we can do on our side of the net. We need to play our game and keep the emphasis on ball control and being aggressive.” head coach Alison Smith said.
The atmosphere in the Washburn gymnasium was electric as the crowd poured in to watch the two teams do battle.
The Miners would open with great intensity to begin the first set but unforced errors seem to plague the girls. The Miners were down by three midway through the set. They would make a run; down by one 15-16, forcing the Comets to call timeout. The timeout seemed to work as the Comets came up with the side out. Underwood ripped off three straight points to go up by four. Again, the Miners would make a two-point game 20-22, but a net violation derailed the comeback and the Comets closed, beating the Miners 21-25.
The second set looked to be the Miners time to shine as they opened up a with a three-point lead to start 4-1. The Comets would compose themselves and chip away at the lead frustrating the Miners with miraculous digs.
