Change of hands for Missouri River access

Boaters and fishermen can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that one of the main accesses for the public to the Missouri River in the area remains available.
There may have been uncertainty about the fate of the boat ramp and surrounding recreational area just west of Great River Energy's (GRE) Stantion Station after GRE announced the retirement of the power plant in July 2016. The power company had maintained the public access site since it was first installed in the 1980s.
However, at a ceremony held last Thursday, GRE officially handed over the property, totaling 13.5 acres, to the City of Stanton, who will own the land and ensure this access to the Missouri River remains open for years to come.
Rick Lancaster, vice president and chief generation officer with GRE, said the decision to give the ramp to Stanton reflected the valuable support and dedication the community had shown to the power plant for all the years of its operation.
“At Great River Energy, we're honored to be able to give something back to the city,” Lancaster said.
Gary Kalmback, Stanton city commissioner, accepted the transfer of the land during the ceremony, praising the strong relationship the power plant and GRE have had with the community over the years.
