Cardinals third and Miners fifth at Washburn VB tournament
By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service
This past weekend it was the varsity’s turn to wake up early on a Saturday morning, head up to the Washburn High School gym, and play volleyball for nearly nine straight hours. Eight teams were on the day’s schedule that began with pool play, which determined where each team would be placed when it came time for the bracket round to begin later in the day. When all was said and done, at the end of the tournament the Washburn Cardinals walked away in third place and the Wilton-Wing Miners were the champions of the consolation bracket, earning fifth place. Starting with pool play in the morning, Washburn won two out of three of their games in Pool A, defeating Garrison-Max and Tioga but losing to Berthold. As a result, they came out of the pool round as a second seed. Wilton-Wing had a similar experience in Pool B, defeating Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky and Underwood, but then losing to Harvey, making the Miners a second seeded team going into the tournament bracket as well.
