Washburn hosted this year’s McLean County Tournament which featured a number of local teams this time around and a couple that took the long trek through winter conditions for some basketball action. The Cardinals started off the tournament against the team that traveled the longest, the Mandaree Warriors. Suffering a loss in the second round against the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans, Washburn closed out this year’s tournament with a win against the Max Cossacks to claim the third place trophy. The first night of games was a series of blowouts, with one team completely taking it to their opponent. For Washburn’s part, in their game against the Warriors, they led by 12 points at halftime and extended that to 22 points by the end of the game. The most notable part of the match occurred early in the first quarter. With his first basket of the game, senior player Jeff Rasmussen topped his 1,000th career point in scoring. Play stopped for a quick moment to give the game ball to Rasmussen as a memento before business resumed and the Cardinals worked their way to a 38-60 win.
