The Washburn Cardinals played their first season game at home on Thursday against the Killdeer Cowboys. The first match would start with strong teamwork from the Cardinals and they would soon pull ahead.
Junior Madelyn Jennings would make the first two attacks on the Cowboys, followed by another later in the set. The Cowboys would attempt to slow the Cardinals down, but wouldn’t be able to make things happen. Later into the set, however, the Cowboys would begin to make a comeback, and would have a few kills in a row. The Cowboys would pull ahead, causing the Cardinals to call a time out.
The Cardinals would leave the time out with motivation to make things happen, and a set by junior Hannah Selensky to Jennings would change the possession in the Cardinals’ favor. Spikes by senior Jordan Waldren and sophomore Ginger Goven would continue the Cardinal reign, and after an intense comeback from the Cowboys, would eventually win the set 25-21.
The second set kicked off to a slower start than the previous, and Killdeer would take the early lead. The Cowboys would hold the Cardinals to 8 points in the second set, shutting them down at every opportunity. The set would end with a Killdeer win 8-25.
