Cardinals take down Comets in overtime thriller

In their biggest game so far this young season, the Washburn Cardinal girls basketball team had their first district matchup of the year against the Underwood Comets on Dec. 16.
Despite Washburn leading for most of the game, the Comets came back to force an overtime standoff. But it was the Cardinals that proved themselves the better team in the extra frame, coming away with a close 50-48 overtime win.
In the ever-important first district matchup of the season for the Cardinals, they hosted the athletic Underwood Comets at home. It was a game that didn’t fail to live up to the expectations placed upon it.
The Cardinals looked really good in the first half, stepping into passing lanes constantly; resulting in Washburn either disrupting the flow of the Comets' offense or just outright stealing the ball with quick hands on the defensive end.
On the opposite side of the court, Washburn was a step too quick for Underwood on a number of plays, consistently drawing fouls that put the home team on the free throw line for some easy points. Cardinal Carly Freeman was especially bothersome using her ball handling skills to get her defenders in some early foul trouble which left the Comets without some key players for a big part of the game.
