A late-game comeback wasn’t enough to give the Cardinals the win this week, as Washburn suffered a loss to the Hornets Monday.
The Washburn girls got a head start in the first inning on their home field Monday, with both Caitlin Scheresky and Jenna Retterath scoring. Harvey/Wells County would answer with two runs of their own in the second, tying the score at 2-2 going into the third.
The Hornets unleashed a fury in the third, pulling out a full 10 runs to take a double-digit lead. The Cardinals would struggle to respond, going two more innings without increasing their score.
At the bottom of the fifth, Washburn woke up, taking a total of six runs to close the gap between the teams.
