Cardinals soar into playoffs with win against Miners
By Adam Thomas
The last regular season contest came in the form of a rivalry game between the Washburn Cardinals and the Wilton-Wing Miners. For the Cardinals, however, the game was something more; it was their gateway into the playoffs. Washburn’s potent offense showed up early and their defense kept the Wilton-Wing off the scoreboard for an entire game, a combined effort that punched their ticket into the post-season with a 38-0 victory. The Cardinals didn’t waste any time getting the ball moving on Thursday night as junior Jeff Rasmussen threw three touchdowns in the first quarter. A ten yard strike to senior Kier Vander Wal, 12 yard pass to senior Ashwin Wienmann, and a short 6 yard toss to sophomore Evan Eberle took the Cardinals to 22 points by the end of the quarter. Miner junior running back Jared Hruby got his team into position to score in the first quarter on a long run, but on a subsequent play, the ball came out and shot into the end zone resulting in a touchback. In the second quarter the only scoring drive was a one play bomb to Eberle who took off to the races, beating out all defenders on his way to pay dirt.
