Cardinals outplay Coyotes

The Washburn Cardinals faced off against the Grant County Coyotes on Sept. 26. The first point of the game would go to the Cardinals, who would fall behind early on. A tip by junior Madelyn Jennings put the team back in the game, and would keep them close behind for the beginning of the set.
Both teams would put up a fight for the point, and long battles would result in Cardinal possession. However, the Coyotes scored, taking it back. The first set went back and forth, with Grant County struggling with their serves and the Cardinals struggling to score. A kill by senior Jordan Waldren would tie the score 12-12. The Cardinals began to fall behind, and would lose the first set 17-25.
The Cardinals were the first to score in the second set. A kill by Jennings would assist in building a lead. Soon after the Coyotes would begin to come back, and would raise the score to 13-7. Grant County would call a timeout, but the Cardinals would maintain the lead. Two spikes by senior Gracey Russell would seal the deal, and the Cardinals would win the second set 25-17.
The Coyotes would be the first to score in the third set. A set from Waldren to sophomore Olivia Retterath who would spike score and tied the game 4-4. The Coyotes would pull ahead from there, causing the Cardinals to fight for the rest of the game. A kill by Jennings would begin the climb. The Cardinals would eventually tie the game, and a kill by sophomore Brynn Hyttinen would end the game in the Cardinals’ favor, 25-20.
