Cardinals fall to Standing Rock in Regionals

Being ousted in the first round of regionals last year, Washburn hoped to improve upon that finish at this year’s regional tournament. Taking fourth in the district tournament lined them up to play last year’s regional champion, the Standing Rock Warriors and their standout player Shauna Long. Although the Cardinals rallied late in the second half, the matchup proved to be too much to handle, and the Cardinals took the loss 46-56. Washburn came out and fought a very defensive first quarter, but they couldn’t get their shots to fall and take advantage of their containment of Standing Rock’s big scorers. The Warriors broke the 7-7 tie at the end of the first quarter with a couple of offensive rebounds that got put back up for points. The second quarter, Washburn still couldn’t find much of the basket except for their free shots from the free-throw line which accounted for seven of their 17 first-half points.
