The Washburn Cardinal Volleyball team ended the district tournament as the third place team with a win against the Garrison-Max Troopers. In the first round of the Region 5 tournament, they were matched up with the second seed out of District 9, the Flasher Bulldogs. After splitting the first two sets, the Cardinals lost the third in a thriller that went into extra points. In the ensuing fourth set, it looked like the wind had come out of Washburn’s sails while the Bulldogs took the set and the game, ending the Cardinals’ post-season run, 1-3. To start off, Flasher set the tone straight away by scoring the first six points of the first set. The Bulldogs expanded on their advantage with an occasional point coming from Washburn’s side. At 11-3, Spanky Clayton and Cori Moberg laid down back-to-back kills to get the Cardinals moving. Samantha Schell followed up a push-kill with two aces to pull her team within five points at 16-11, but they were unable to get any closer than that as Flasher maintained their lead all the way to 25-15 to take the set.
