Cardinals bow out in district tournament

Seeded fifth going into the district tournament, the Washburn Cardinal Boys Basketball team had an uphill battle ahead of them over the weekend in Garrison.

Although they ended the regular season 7-12 on the season and 3-3 in district play, the Cardinals entered the post season with a very potent defense, but at the same time they still lacked efficiency on the offensive end.

It was that weakness that ultimately ended their season.

On opening day, the Cardinals took the game down to the wire against the TLMM Trojans, but were a shot behind at the end of the game, 53-50. As a result, they were pushed into a regional qualifying game on Saturday against the Max Cossacks; it was another close one but Max made the extra shots they needed to end Washburn’s season, 55-50.

Washburn kicked off the tournament with the early game on Thursday against the fourth seeded TLMM Trojans and they couldn’t have hoped for a better start.

Getting off on a 14-1 run, Washburn didn’t allow a Trojan field goal in the first three minutes of play.
