The Washburn Cardinals girls basketball team opened the season Tuesday night versus Kidder County on their home court. Abby Tweeten opened the scoring for the cardinals with a put back in the first few minutes. The first quarter was pretty even up until about midway through when the Lady Pirates began getting quick outlets and scored
4 unanswered fast break points. At the end of the first quarter, it was 9-5 Kidder County.
The second quarter was characterized by the Lady Pirates zone defense that suffocated the Cardinals. The aggressive defense forced the Cardinals into positions where the Pirates could trap. The Cardinals turned the ball over and this would lead to fast break points for the pirates. Down by ten, leading into the closing seconds, Carly Freeman drained a three pointer to cut the lead to 7 and give the Cardinals some momentum heading into the locker room at half.
