Firefighters responded to a shop fire south of Underwood just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, battling the blaze for over an hour before getting it under control.
A storage building on a residential property located along McLean County Road 18, just off of U.S. Highway 83, caught fire Tuesday afternoon. Washburn and Underwood Fire Departments, along with the McLean County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the structure fire.
Clayton Verke of the Washburn Fire Department said that the insurance agency still needed to investigate the blaze, but that he had a guess as to the cause.
“My guess would be the dumpster,” Verke said. “Something in it ignited.”
The dumpster was located on the northeast side of the building, where the firefighters were focusing much of their attention, peeling back scorched siding and dousing hot spots. Other emergency personnel worked to remove vehicles and other valuable items from the shop.
