The Washburn High School Speech Team placed second at the State Class B Speech Tournament on Saturday. Senior James Cavo and sophomore Kayle Borner made history for their state champion performances at the competition. Cavo earned the top placing in Serious and Borner came out on top in Poetry. A team of 16 had qualified for the state tournament and 10 went on to the finals. As a group they had seven of the 14 categories covered. Cavo, a senior, came to the tournament as defending state champion in Serious category. He said there was a lot on his shoulders to hold the spot. After earning first, he said the tough part is now having to say goodbye to such a great group of performers. Cavo and Nick Due, a junior, said that the seventh and eighth graders have made great strides and will surely continue a great tradition of speech and drama. Head speech/drama coach Vickie Mayer said that the team performed very well together. To have two state champs was indeed a great feeling. Due, who made it into the finals, said that he has never seen such a great team working together to earn a top place.
