School tackles driver shortage

Wilton Public School is tackling a bus driver shortage by pulling bus routes back into district lines.
With the first day of school arriving in less than a month and one of four bus routes lacking a driver, Wilton school administrators had a choice to make. Superintendent Andrew Jordan said his options are limited, but that he sent a letter out letting families know the routes have been redrawn and contained within district lines.
“We cut it down to three routes,” Jordan said. “Anybody out of the district would have to meet the bus at a centralized location.”
Three of the school’s drivers were present at the meeting, and asked where these centralized locations would be. Business manager Jenna Kirchmeier said it depended on the route, and that one route would likely stop at the fire hall in Baldwin to pick up outliers.
Jordan said he has sent out a letter that identifies people who will have to make accommodations to meet at the centralized locations.
Jordan said his priority was keeping routes short enough so that kids weren’t riding for longer than an hour and 15 minutes.
