School completes active shooter training

Just a few days after a suspect in the threat that shut down the Bismarck State College campus was apprehended north of Washburn, local school staff members have completed active shooter training as part of a North Dakota Safety Council Site Assessment that was done in the fall.
Washburn Public Schools Superintendent Brad Rinas said former law enforcement officer Don Mosemen educated faculty members for two hours in December on safety in the school and a final two hours on Monday, detailing the current procedures for dealing with an active shooter in a school setting. Moseman was a responder to the Columbine shooting in 1999.
"Active shooter response training has changed a lot over the years, so his presentation in is based on the most recent best practices, as determined by the Department of Homeland Security," Rinas said.
The training was part of a NDSC site assessment, which was part of a grant that was available to public schools. Moseman, who was a responder to the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, did the assessment in the fall and looked at all safety aspects of the school, including its plans for responding to an active shooter or other emergencies.
