Safety corridors help reduce crashes

WASHBURN – A safety corridor installed here two years ago by the North Dakota Highway Patrol has reduced the number of fatal and severe crashes between 15 to 65 percent. Lauren Bjork, Safety Public Information Program Manager with Vision Zero, noted that the corridor – the 36 mile stretch of U.S. Highway 83 between Washburn and Bismarck – noted the effectiveness of the safety campaign, which is part of Vision Zero’s strategy to help eliminate motor vehicle crash fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roads.
That particular stretch, Bjork said, was selected to be a site of a Safety Corridor because of analysis that showed a higher number of crash densities taking place there. “This was a large reason why Bismarck to Washburn was chosen,” Bjork said. In the Highway 83 Safety
Corridor, drivers “will notice additional signage indicating reduced speed, no-passing zones, information about road conditions and reminders to buckle up, drive sober and distraction-free,” Bjork said.
