The average person might hear Kayla Wiese’s life story and think she’s been given a lot of lemons. Kayla will tell you it hasn’t been an easy walk through life but there are some things she wouldn’t trade for the world. She was born with spina bifida, a condition in which her backbone and spinal canal did not close before birth. It has left one of Kayla’s legs shorter than the other. She has gone through 24 surgeries to correct the problem and more may be on the way to help stop the pain that she is experiencing now more than ever. She says she is easy to recognize. "I’m the one on crutches," she said. She wakes up some mornings screaming with pain and misses class at Washburn High School regularly because some days the pain is unbearable.
