Questions arise over coal operations

Multiple reports of Coal Creek Station and Falkirk Mine discussing closure have not been confirmed, but the news made its way to McLean County Commissioners Tuesday morning.
Commissioners spent a few minutes of Tuesday’s meeting talking about the potential impact of discontinuing coal operations in the county.
“It would be about $500,000 a year in revenue,” County Auditor Beth Knutson said, referencing Coal Severance Tax the county receives annually.
The talk during the meeting echoed reports that had begun circulating over the weekend, with multiple reports to BHG offices about Great River Energy’s Coal Creek Station and North American Coal’s Falkirk Mine warning employees about closure in coming years.
