Pick your produce at a market near you

By Erica Kingston, BHG Intern

Every Friday they set up shop in the Enerbase parking lot. They open the blue coolers and let the varieties of peppers, cucumbers and other produce peek out for the customers to pick and choose from the selection. Dwight and Patsy Duke of Hensler, N.D., spend their summers moving between Washburn, Beulah, Hazen and Bismarck providing produce to the towns’ farmer’s markets. The Dukes go to six markets a week, with Bismarck hosting three days a week. Their season begins with a booth at the Lewis and Clark Riverboat Days. Right now they are the only vendors on Fridays in Washburn. “We would love to have some other people come,” Patsy said. “In the fall Russell Leidholm comes with beef and takes orders for organically raised beef. We’d love to have someone with baked goods or more veggies.” Duke is the president for each of the farmer’s markets - his love of planting and harvesting crops began a long time ago.
