Pennies for Parks finishes third park in five years

By Erica Kingston, BHG Intern

A group of Washburn residents got together when they saw a need in the community. The result: three completely redone parks. Pennies for Parks started as a group of friends who wanted to update the “outdated and unsafe” parks in Washburn. Five years later, the last park on their list is near completion. “It’s been a lot of fun,” said Pennies for Parks member Alyson Teigen. “It was a group of friends working together. It’s been a lot of work but we had a ton of fun.” Since the beginning of the group in May of 2006, Pennies for Parks has been busy raising money for the park updates. Their first project was Riverside Park and once that was finished, Renner Park, which is handicap accessible, was next on the list. Their last project, Sundown Park, is near completion now awaiting the border edging. The group also used part of the money raised to put up a swing set in Pool Park.
