Highway Patrol Trooper Rick Richard, Washburn, was recently named the North Dakota Peace Officer of the Year.

He received one of the North Dakota Peace Officers Association’s (NDPOA) highest honors at a ceremony in Grand Forks on Aug. 14.

The award is given in recognition of outstanding service, professional dignity and unselfish personal contributions of the officer’s time and talents to the organization and the citizens of North Dakota.

The officer must be held in high regard by fellow peace officers and the general public, and have a consistent mark of excellence upon his/her life.

Much like the time he received the Trooper of the Year award, Richard said he had to stop and ask himself, "What did I do so differently, than any other officer, that made me deserving of this award?"

With 34 years of law enforcement under his belt – 31 of those as a state trooper – it’s safe to say he is a deserving recipient of the honor.
