Opening his doors to the ‘unchurched’

Since becoming pastor of St. Edwin’s Church in Washburn nearly eight years ago, Father Patrick Cunningham’s sole mission has always been to help people cultivate and enhance their relationship with God.
And though some of these worshippers are Catholics who have reportedly lost their way and may be in need of redirection, a vast group of others, he says, are living in total denial of the Holy Spirit.
“I’m not interested in fishing in the Lutheran pond to see if I can catch a Lutheran,” said Cunningham, a North Dakota transplant via Phillipsburg, Kansas. “If every church here in town on Sunday had every one of their members in church, there would be probably twice as many people not in any church. There are that many unchurched people — that’s the biggest denomination.”
