‘Welcome to Washburn’ sign planned

A new community sign is currently in the works, with Sales and Use tax money covering $50,000 and Washburn High School funding $10,000 of the cost.
The Washburn Sales and Use Tax committee approved $50,000 from the community infrustructure fund the “Welcome to Washburn” sign, which will be located on the corner of Border Lane and Seventh Street, on school property.
Tana Larsen, Economic Development and Marketing Director, said the sign, which will be 30-feet tall, includes an electronic board that will promote local events.
“The school will control all school programing and I’ll control all community programing,” Larsen said, saying it will be a joint partnership between the city and school.
The school approved $10,000 for the sign, with another $5,000 anticipated for installation. The school will also be in charge of all maintenance for the lifetime of the structure.
“It’s on the school property, and they will maintain it and pay the utilities,” City Auditor Joan Zimmerman said.
