The Washburn School Board got a glimpse Monday of what the school could look like after a major renovation, with rearranged classrooms, a secure checkpoint and an elevator.
Jennifer Burke Jackson of JLG shared preliminary designs Monday night with the Washburn School Board, taking the group through a tour of potential changes.
Jackson, attending via video conference, f irst presented Phase One, which included options for a handicap accessible ramp from the main f loor of the school to the Olde Gym. ADA accessibilit y is one of the primary objectives for the potential remodel, with the board seeking handicap access to all floors of the school.
Board members voiced concern over the amount of floor space that would be taken up by the ramp in the design, and the risk of encroaching on the basketball court. After evaluating a few options, board president Rick Tweeten offered a suggestion.
“What if we put in a lift in place of stairs? Get rid of the stairs,” Tweeten said. “You lose least amount of seating, least amount of floor space.”
Jackson said she would look at lift options and bring them back to the board. Other options discussed for the gym included trimming down the size of the stage to add more floor room and raising the floor to eliminate the need for a lift.
