The Washburn School Board held a meeting on Monday, Dec. 16. The first meeting at 6 p.m. was for the policy committee with the school board joining at 7 p.m.

During the meeting, the policy committee discussed how to update their procedures for administering medication to the students. The state requires trained staff members to administer medication after a law was passed during the last legislative session. Currently, there are trained staff members administering medication; however, there are new state standards that need to be met.

"After the law went into effect on July 1, our intent is to train people as soon as is practical. Our two secretaries do most of the medication administering and have been trained," said Brad Rinas, Washburn Public Schools superintendent.

The policy update is set to take place this year to follow the new state law on administering medication. Rinas said, "We have a policy in place already, but we need to make sure it aligns with the new state law."

One issue the policy board had with the recommended school board policy was it is giving the maximum protection for a school district; however, it is simply too much restriction.
