Beautification committee regroups
By Alyssa Schafer
Washburn residents drive the city’s streets every day and hardly notice the downtown storefronts. But for visitors, the facades that line Main Avenue leave a lasting impression. The Washburn Beautification Committee started in 2006, with the primary goal of keeping Washburn and its businesses looking good. Now a new set of community leaders is working to revamp the committee and start new projects that will revitalize Washburn’s downtown image. Current committee members include Mark Lelm, Joan Zimmerman, Tom Neary, Mike Chase and Ethel Mart. "I think we have a good group of people," Joan Zimmerman said. "There’s a lot of possibilities once you get organized. We’re just kind of rebuilding and regrouping now." Signage is one major initiative that the committee is interested in pursuing.
