The shell is up. The sign sits in a snowbank ready to be hoisted into place.
Work is in progress on one of the more than 8,000 Family Dollar stores in the U.S. – one of the largest chain store operations in the country.
The Washburn store, the 18th of the chain in North Dakota, is located on U.S. Highway 83. The building permit from the City of Washburn was issued to Delta T Development of Rainbow City, Ala., "engineers, contractors, developers." The 80 x 104 ft. (8,320 sq. ft.) metal building has a construction value of $450,000.
The store, described as a mini-Target, includes auto care products, cell phones, clothing, electronics, food items but not fresh meat or produce, health and beauty supplies, home décor, office and school supplies, pet supplies and seasonal goods.
Although "dollar" is in its name, merchandise in the store isn’t necessarily priced at $1. The company’s website indicates "while shoppers can find many items at $1 or less, most items in the store are priced below $10."
Efforts by The Leader-News to obtain information on its projected opening date have gone unanswered at company headquarters in Matthews, N.C. – a suburb of Charlotte.
