A more fitness-friendly Memorial Building
By Michael Johnson, Editor
It’s been some time since Washburn has had a fitness facility for residents to pump iron or run up a good sweat. Some in the community want to see that changed to create a more fitness-friendly community. It appears, for the individual, the options are limited. Michelle Effertz visited Washburn city commissioners at the last regular meeting to ask what options she has as a resident. She would like to be able to walk at the Memorial Building after work at about 4:30 p.m. and on weekends. “There’s no place for people to work out,” Effertz said. “I hear it from other people too. There’s got to be some place that you can work out.” The Memorial Building is now closed after 4:30 p.m. because once the city employees go home the buildings are locked except for those who have reserved the building and have received a key. “We just don’t hand out keys to anybody,” commissioner Ray Hager said. “Is there a monthly fee a person could pay,” Effertz asked.
