Velva wins squeaker in final stanza

The home-standing Underwood Comets girls hoops team fell a little shy of picking up a win last Friday night after trading the lead several times through the first 3-1/2 quarters with state-ranked Velva, before falling in the last couple minutes by the score of 45-37. “The game was a minute-and-a-half too long for us,” laughed Comet coach Toni Cottingham. The Comets stuck with their game plan, they were focused, and they did a nice job of forcing Velva to take some shots they weren’t comfortable with, she added.  The Comets just came up short.  “Overall, I was very happy with the way we came out to play the number seven ranked team in the state.” The Comets held a slim 31-30 lead going into the final stanza, but found themselves struggling with Velva’s full-court defense, which forced 11 Comet turnovers in the final stanza, turnovers the Aggies turned into points as they outscored the Comets 15-7 the final quarter.
