Tuesday night’s final game at the Vonderheide Gymnasium in Underwood was everything a Class B high school basketball game is supposed to be – competitive, fun to watch, and down to the wire with a buzzer-beater shot giving the winners the overtime victory.
After battling through four quarters plus some overtime minutes, Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky senior guard J.P. Pizarro launched a shot from behind the arc, sinking the game-winner as the clock ran out on the overtime minutes. The Trojans won the District 10 battle by the score of 58-55.
TLMM head coach Joi Anderson said he was almost expecting the game to go into another overtime before Pizarro stepped up and hit his shot.
“He only shot the ball two other times before that,” said Anderson.
However, he noted, Pizarro is one of several pretty decent outside shooters, said Anderson, that could have put up that shot.
The Trojans have been working on spreading the shooting around in part to take some pressure off of senior guard/forward Trapper Jacobs, who finished the game with 25 points.
