A small contingent of five athletes will be representing the Central McLean Cougars this Friday and Saturday at the State Track Meet in Bismarck, which is four more athletes than had been headed there just a few days ago.

Saturday’s South Central Region meet saw the two-mile relay team of Mackenzie Snyder, Madison Holm, Callie Berg and McKenna Wilson capture second place in the relay to ensure themselves a spot at the state meet later this week. They join leaper Mariah Sellon, who once again qualified for state by winning the long jump. Sellon had previously qualified for state in her premier event earlier this season.

The top three finishers at the regional meet qualify for state, as do the athletes who meet qualifying time and distance standards. The Cougar runners qualified by placing second at the regional meet with their time of 10:32.99, finishing behind winners Southern McLean, which won the race in 10:28.15.

The 400- and 800-meter relay teams both placed fourth, just out of state qualifying, while the 1600-meter relay team finished in fifth place.

Central McLean coach Lee Weisgarber said he had hopes that more of the girls’ relays would qualify, but they came up short.
