The Underwood Comets will be entering the Region 5 tournament this coming Monday as the number two seed from District 10, not quite what they wanted to be, but they’re going to regionals, and that’s the important thing, noted Comet coach Toni Cottingham. The Comets fell to Wilton-Wing in the title game of the district tournament Monday night by the score of 61-53 as W-W’s Jocelyn Bergquist shot the lights out, scoring 28 points to lead all scorers.
While it may have seemed like the Miners were out-shooting the Comets from the floor, it was actually at the free throw line where the Miners held the edge, knocking in 22 of 29 free shots, while the Comets hit 14 of 26.
For the game, according to tournament stats, the Comets held the percentage edge in shooting, knocking down 34.5 percent (19 of 55) of their two-pointers to Wilton-Wing’s 30 percent (18 of 60). The Miners knocked down two more three-pointers than the Comets did, but the real edge came at the charity stripe, and the Miners’ coming out strong early in the game.
"The key for Wilton . . . their two seniors stepped up," said Cottingham. "Bergquist and Clausen . . . kudos to them. Those girls made shots with pressure."
Clausen finished the game with 19 points, adding more offensive punch to the Miners’ attack.
Underwood was led by Charley Auck and Abby Landenberger, who were each good for 14 points.
