‘Stangs sting Comets in hard-hitting match-up

By Suzanne Werre, BHG News Service

The Underwood Comets and Surrey Mustangs had a rematch of sorts of this past fall’s gridiron game on the basketball court Monday night, and at times, it looked like the Comets were taking some pretty hard hits, hitting the floor as the Mustangs pushed their way to hoop. The Mustangs out-muscled the Comets who had held a 32-27 half-time lead, winning the game by the score of 55-51. Other action this past week, as the Comets go into the District 10 tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, saw the Comets boys knock off Sawyer by the score of 58-47, and lose by a buzzer-beater to Center-Stanton last Tuesday by the score of 44-42. With the regular season over, the last three games including a big win and two barn burners, the Comets should be ready to do more battle this Thursday as they take on Washburn at about 7 p.m. in first round action. “We’ve got to win two,” summed up Underwood Coach Steve Cottingham, when asked what his team would need to do to advance to the Region 5 tournament. “I feel like our games have been pretty competitive with the other teams seeded above us. It’s going to be who puts together a few good games.”
