‘Cats up-end Comets for ‘10’ title

The third time was a charm for the Center-Stanton Wildcats as the top-seeded Wildcats captured the District 10 girls basketball championship, bumping off the Underwood Comets by the score of 38-35 Saturday night in Garrison.
In the two previous meetings between the Comets and Wildcats, the Comets came out on top – also by three-point margins. The last two games even had the same score – just reversed, as Underwood topped the Wildcats in their regular-season game 38-35.
Saturday night, it was the Wildcats’ turn to take the “W” as they took advantage of a dismal second-quarter scoring effort from Underwood as the Comets, with junior forward Taysha Snyder on the bench for much of the quarter with two fouls, scored just two points that stanza, trailing 13-12 at the half.
The Comets would eventually find themselves trailing by as many as 10 points, 31-21, before they started coming back the final stanza as they chipped away at Center with some free throws by Maggie Eng and Lexie Jacobson, as well as a bucket from underneath by Milah Kibbel that cut the gap to five points with about three minutes remaining.
Snyder followed up with three points the hard way with just over two minutes remaining, and she followed up with a full-court drive to the bucket for another score, tying the score at 31 with 1:25 remaining.
