Lady Comets win heart-stopper
By Brenda L. Shelkey
The McLean County tournament is one of those events that is meant to help teams get their feet wet and find out where the competition is at before really hitting the season. Going into the tournament, Comet Head Coach Toni Cottingham was confident that her girls would be in good competitive shape. What she didn’t know was that the championship game would test them at every level. In the opening round, the Comets were matched against the White Shield Warriors, easing the Comets into the season. Cottingham got a chance to see what her girls had in them. "We came out and took care of business," said Cottingham. "I was able to get all ten of our players into the game. They all got good minutes and we got them all in the scoring column." The Comets walked away with the win: Comets 56, Warriors 19. Top scorers for that game were Hunter Wilson with 10, Alix Auch 9, Crystal Dammen 8, Natalie Eslinger 7, and Samanatha Krueger with 6. The Comets easily out-rebounded the Warriors 44 to 30 and kept the Comet turnovers to a minimum. The final score was 56-19, moving the Comets into the semi-final round against Our Redeemers on Friday.
