Ladies drop first two opponents

The Underwood Comets girls cruised to an easy first victory last Monday night on the hard court, rolling over a home-standing Solen team by the score of 67-30, then followed up with a 53-38 district win over a home-standing Washburn team. Both wins go a long way as far as learning what they’re going to need to do to knock off number one seed Turtle Lake-Mercer in the upcoming McLean County Invitational Tournament that starts Thursday, Jan 3., in Wilton. The Comets will be taking on White Shield in the final game of the night, which is set to start at approximately 7:30. The Trojans open up the tournament at 3:30, taking on Warwick, so the stage is set for the top two teams of the tournament to meet in the title match-up. But Underwood coach Toni Cottingham isn’t really looking toward that title game yet. The Comets need to get there first. “We need to take one game at a time. We need to get into shape over the Christmas break, and if we get into the shape that we need to be in so we don’t have the mental breakdowns, I think we’ll be ready for them,” she said.
