The McLean County Cougars made their mark at the state track meet held at Bismarck this last weekend. The Cougar boys placed ninth overall and senior Reed Hefta threw the discus, placing fifth for the Cougars. At Friday’s parade of athletes, the Cougar track team proudly represented their colors, before going into the preliminary round of competition, trying to qualify for the final round on Saturday, May 23. Senior Cougar, Reed Hefta, once again broke the 140 foot mark in the discus to place fifth at state with a throw of 142’3". This was Hefta’s second year to qualify at the state level for the Cougars. He enjoyed the experience even more the second time around. "It was a good experience," said Hefta. "Being on the podium was pretty cool, standing there with the top throwers in the state." Head Coach Lee Weisgarber congratulated Hefta on his fifth place. He said, "Reed’s placing throw was his first throw of the event." According to Weisgarber, the boys’ relays ran good times at state. Each relay came into the meet rated lower than they actually finished. The 4 x 200 meter relay, including Jacob Ruff, Dylan Ruff, Brandon Aldinger, and Devon Auck, made the finals by running 1:34.94, sending them into the finals. They ran 1:35.63 on Saturday, where they finished ninth overall.
