Rugby’s girls showed they will be a team to be reckoned with at the upcoming state track meet, as the Panthers ran away with the team title at the Last Chance Meet in Velva Monday, scoring 131 points.
Central McLean, led by a first-place 1600-meter relay finish and a first place in the long jump from Mariah Sellon, placed fifth as a team with 48.5 points.
Members of the winning relay team were Mackenzie Snyder, Chailee Berg, Madison Holm and Emily Eichhorst, winning the race with a time of 4:33.00, more than two seconds faster than second-place Velva-Drake-Anamoose. Sellon won the long jump with her leap of 14-11.5.
In the boys’ division, Velva-Drake-Anamoose won the team competition with 134 points, while Central McLean finished 10th with 24 points led by Hakeem Abdullah’s second-place finish in the long jump. Abdullah was good for a leap of 17-8.
"It was a long day fighting the cold and wind," noted cougar coach Lee Weisgarber. "Luckily we had Friday."
Friday was a whole different track meet, as sunny skies and light winds prevailed, making for an ideal day to hit state-qualifying marks in several events.
