Girls get another district win

By Mary Hefta, BHG News Service

In the early minutes of the first quarter the Comet girls basketball team struggled to put the ball in the basket.  At the six-minute mark of the first, junior Sam Cottingham dropped a three-pointer from the top of the key to get the Comet offense going.  The score bounced back and forth in the first quarter with Garrison ahead 10-9 at the end of the first eight minutes. The game remained close until the 2:55 mark in the half.  Sophomore Abby Landenberger drove for two points and freshman Krista Blotske canned a three-pointer to put the Comets up by four. Although Garrison managed to answer with a few baskets the Comets exploded for six quick points as the half waned.  When the Comets came out after the halftime break sophomore Emma Lee nailed a 10-foot jumper that started a Comet 10-1 scoring drive in the third quarter. Senior Taylor Sorensen added four points in the quarter while Cottingham had two free throws.  Freshman Charley Auck also added a bucket after a nice pass from fellow Freshman Erin Dammann. Garrison was able to end the scoring drought in the final quarter of regulation scoring 11 points before the Comets could put the ball in the hole.  Landenberger ended the Comets’ scoring drought with a bucket.  The Comets found themselves in some foul trouble but managed to keep everyone on the floor.
