The Grant County Coyotes and their big gun Sydney Bentz were too much for the Underwood Comets last Thursday, turning back the Comets in three sets at the Region 5 volleyball tournament at the Shiloh Christian gymnasium.

In their first appearance in a region championship match, the Comets knew they had to focus on limiting the impact of the Grant County junior hitter Bentz, but she was not to be denied, counting 23 kills to lead the Coyotes to the state tournament this week in Minot. And it wasn’t just Bentz that came to play for Grant County. Bentz’s tough-hitting teammates came ready to battle for the title.

"(The Coyotes) came ready to play, and although we had a strategy to try to stop Bentz, the rest of the team stood behind her and they played a complete match," commented Underwood coach Mary Hefta. "We stuck with them and the scores were respectable, but that night the Coyotes were just too much for us."

The Coyotes won the games 25-16, 25-18 and 25-18.

Seniors Abby Landenberger and Anne Hefta paced the Comets at the net in kills, each going for their own particular brand of kill. Landenberger, a power hitter, slammed nine kills by the Coyotes, while Hefta, more of a "hit it where they ain’t" master of the soft touch, counted eight.
