The Central McLean Cougars started the softball season with a win, overcoming some struggles with the bats to top Wilton-Wing 11-9 Monday in a marathon nearly 2-1/2-hour game.
Strike-outs far outnumbered the hits and runs for both teams, as the Cougars were struck out 17 times, while the Miners were struck out 16 times by CM pitcher Sophie Sparrow. Sparrow also gave up 10 walks.
It was the first game – there are a few things the team needs to work on.
“We need to work on putting the ball in play and not striking out, and just protecting the zone,” said Head Coach Zach Siewert.
The Cougars were up 4-0 when the Miners scored two points of their own in the bottom of the third inning, but the Cougars answered with runs the next three innings, including a four-run fifth inning.
