Washburn knew it had its hands full in facing a visiting 13-3 Central McLean team on a five-game winning streak, and as it turned out the Lady Cougars dominated the rivalry matchup from stem to stern, 68-28.
Hope was in the air for the Redbirds early on, as their spunky floor general Brynn Hyttinen staked her side to a 3-0 lead with a forceful drive for two and finished it off by hitting the following free throw. No. 10 would follow that up by picking Anna Skachenko’s pocket two minutes into the first quarter and gliding to the other end for the easy bucket at 5-2.
That lead, however, was short-lived thanks to the shooting prowess of Ashtyn Smith, who knocked in her first of five tries at the fiveminute mark and handing the Cougars a 7-5 advantage that would only grow from that point forward.
