Cougar fast-pitch girls return key vets

The Central McLean Cougars are supposed to have their opening fast-pitch softball game of the season this Monday in Turtle Lake, and with a few more sunny days between now and then, they should be good-to-go. As of the team’s most recent practice, though, the field was pretty sloppy, so until this coming Monday, it will be a wait-and-see approach to the game.
The Cougars return several key players on last year’s team, having their sights set on the regional tournament, and possibly a state berth.
“The top four teams at regionals go to state, so there’s a good possibility, if we play well,” said Cougar Head Coach Kyle Hunt.
The Cougars fell short of that goal last year, losing their play-in game to the regional tournament, but Hunt is not planning on that happening again this year.
“We want to improve from last year and get to the regional tournament,” said Hunt.
Key returners for the Cougars include pitchers Zoe Smalls, a senior, and Maria Wirtz, a junior, the team’s top two pitchers from last season.
