The intensity of a battle between two teams of “frenemies” was evident right away Thursday night when the Turtle Lake-Mercer-McClusky Trojans hosted the opponent from down the road, Underwood, in Class B volleyball action. After battling to a 25-22 win the first set, the Comets built on that momentum, taking the next two games by 25-18 and 25-16 to win the match 3-0.
Despite the lopsided score, Underwood coach Loretta Hansen says it was not an easy win for the Comets.
“We had to fight for every point we got,” said the first-year coach. “We had a lot of long volleys, and we just had a lot of girls step up and play a good game, but we literally had to work for every point we earned.”
The Comets got their serves going the way they wanted, added, Hansen, which led to several easy points coming from aces. Bailey Gross and Milah Kibbel paced the Comets in serving with five aces each, which TLMM’s Mackenzie Holt slammed six aces past the Comets.
