Nobody really wants to be playing in that game – that third-place regional game – but that’s where the Underwood Comets found themselves this past Thursday. After they got past the initial “I really don’t want to be playing this game” phase, they decided that if they had to be there, they wanted to win it. So, after leading by just seven points going into the final stanza of the game, the Comets poured in 24 points to roll to the 57-38 win, taking the third-place trophy.
The Comets found themselves in the third-place game when they lost a nail-biter, two-point semifinal game to eventual region champion Grant County Tuesday night.
“It’s tough to have to play that game, especially when you’re that close, but I think it was a good experience for all the kids to play in that regional tournament, get to play three games – we have a lot coming back next year and I’m excited to see what that will hold,” said Underwood Coach Jared Kautzman.
Junior Mackenzie Snyder led all scorers with 20 points, while McKenna Wilson tossed in 12 for the Comets’ other double-digit scoring effort. Standing Rock was led by Megan Molash’s 15 points.
The first half of the game, it looked like neither team wanted to be there, noted Kautzman. “The second half we played little bit better, tried to run a little bit more, increase the pressure a little bit and tried to get some easy transition points.”
